Eligibility for a Dependent Child Visa

To be eligible for a Dependent Child Student Visa, you must meet these key criteria:

  • Sponsorship: You must hold an eligible work visa and meet the appropriate income threshold requirement, or you must hold a student visa studying for a PhD programme, a New Zealand Aid Programme Scholarship, or be in New Zealand for a New Zealand Government-approved student exchange scheme.

  • Relationship to Sponsor: You must be the dependent child’s parent.

  • Age requirement: Your child must be 17 years old or under, or 18 – 19 years old with no children of their own and financially dependent on you.

  • Health and Character: Your child must meet the good health and character requirements.

  • Financial Sponsorship: You must have enough money to support your child while they are in New Zealand and enough money for their return ticket if required.
