The Dependent Child Student Visa enables your child to join you while you pursue your own career or educational goals in NZ. This visa will allow your child to study at a primary or secondary school in New Zealand as a domestic student, without having to pay international student fees.

Eligibility for a Dependent Child Student Visa

To be eligible for a Dependent Child Student Visa, you must meet these key criteria:

  • Sponsorship: You must hold an eligible work visa and meet the appropriate income threshold requirement, or you must hold a student visa studying for a PhD programme, a New Zealand Aid Programme Scholarship, or be in New Zealand for a New Zealand Government-approved student exchange scheme.

  • Relationship to Sponsor: You must be the dependent child’s parent.

  • Age requirement: Your child must be 17 years old or under, or 18 – 19 years old with no children of their own and financially dependent on you.

  • Health and Character: Your child must meet the good health and character requirements.

  • Financial Sponsorship: You must have enough money to support your child while they are in New Zealand and enough money for their return ticket if required.
